A1 Patch A1 Satellite was launched with a DSCS II on a Titan 34D on 30 Oct 82. This launch was a triple-first success. It was the first successful Inertial Upper Stage (IUS) launch, first successful DSCS III launch and the first successful launch of a DSCS II/ DSCS III pair. The DSCS III satellite is three-axis stabilized vs the spin stabilized DSCS II. The DSCS III also includes three waveguide lens multiple beam antennas (MBA). The DSCS III satellite also carries a second payload called the Single Channel Transponder (SCT) for AFSATCOM communications.
